New Movies and Shows to Stream This Weekend: The Kardashians (Season 2), Sydney + More
The Kardashians can’t stay off our screens for long! After wrapping season one of the family’s eponymous show in June, they’re back with season two of their re-branded show which is now on Hulu. While this docu-series chronicles what feels like every waking moment of their lives, the Apple TV+ documentary Sydney, which is produced by Oprah Winfrey, takes a wider-lens approach, looking back at the life of Sidney Poitier and his lasting impact. And on Netflix, Tyler Perry’s latest joint is out now; A Jazzman’s Blues is a story of unrequited love in the mid-1900s deep south, with a soundtrack that’s heavy on the blues and jazz that came out of that era.

New on Hulu September 22: The Kardashians Season 2
The family that has created an empire out of perpetuating a non-stop media cycle about their lives is back! But don’t take that the wrong way, the Children (Khildren?) of Kris are darn good at doing what they do. So what can we expect from the Kardashian family on the latest season of the TV show that bears their name? Among the many issues on display this season are Kylie’s post-partum depression, Kourtney’s preparation for her wedding to Travis Barker, and the huge public backlash to Kim’s interview where she claimed that some people don’t work hard enough. Through all the drama though, there’s one thing that remains constant, and that’s this family’s love for each other.

New on Apple TV+ September 23: Sydney
Apple TV+’s new documentary, Sydney, is all about the life of actor and civil rights icon Sidney Poitier, who died this past January. Fortunately for us all, Poitier was still alive when the film was being made and he appears in it, along with Oprah Winfrey, and other Hollywood icons like Barbra Streisand, Morgan Freeman, and Halle Berry, to discuss his work and his legacy. The film depicts how Poitier rose to fame in Hollywood against the backdrop of the civil rights movement, becoming inextricably linked with the image of a powerful, self-respecting Black man, both on-screen and off, and saddled with the duty of representing an entire race in popular culture.

New on Netflix September 23: A Jazzman’s Blues
A Jazzman’s Blues was written by Tyler Perry many years ago, early in his career. He held on to the script for decades until he felt the time was right to tell the story of a Black singer named Bayou, played by Joshua Boone, who is in love with a woman named Leanne (Solea Pfeiffer). Their love affair is forbidden and eventually they are forced apart for years despite their enduring love. Perry directed and produced the story as well, and the film, which weaves romance with rousing musical performances, features music from Ruth B. and Terence Blanchard, and choreography from dance legend Debbie Allen.
