With National Signing Day here and rosters starting to take shape for spring, we thought we’d update everyone on some of the outgoing players this offseason.
Michigan football saw 10 players on the 2022 roster depart via the transfer portal, which saw the latest flurry of activity end on Jan. 18.
Players will have another opportunity to enter during a 15-day period in the spring, May 1-May 15, and it’s possible we’ll see more Wolverines depart after the extended practice session.
But until then, here’s an update on each outgoing Michigan player…

TE Eric All
Destination: Iowa
Eligibility: Two seasons left (fifth-year senior)
Michigan’s star tight end elected to depart rather abruptly, and upset, after a back injury left him sidelined for much of the 2022 season. All only appeared in three games, catching three passes for 36 yards, after he was an honorable mention all-Big Ten selection in 2021.

WR Andrell Anthony
Destination: Oklahoma
Eligibility: 2 seasons left (junior)
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound wideout from East Lansing left after two underwhelming seasons at Michigan, where the Wolverines designed their offense around their rushing attack. Anthony had 19 catches for 328 yards and four touchdowns in two years, and just twice had a multi-catch game.

QB Alan Bowman
Destination: Oklahoma State
Eligibility: 1 season left (graduate student)
The Texas Tech transfer showed up at Michigan in 2021 hoping to compete for the starting job, but instead wound up third on the depth chart behind Cade McNamara and JJ McCarthy. Bowman appeared in a total of six games over two seasons, attempting 11 passes while throwing a touchdown. He’ll get one last crack at it in the Big 12.

TE Louis Hansen
Destination: Connecticut
Eligibility: 2 seasons left (junior)
Hansen, a 6-foot-6, 252-pound tight end, will get a fresh start in his native northeast after struggling to crack the depth chart at Michigan in his first two seasons. He did not notch a catch in the three games he played, and largely played as a reserve in non-conference games.
QB Cade McNamara
Destination: Iowa
Eligibility: 2 seasons left (graduate student)
McNamara was the first transfer domino to fall in December, when the former starting quarterback elected to leave for a bigger opportunity with Iowa. He lost the starting job to JJ McCarthy in 2022 and would have been in line to be the backup during the remainder of his Michigan career, which included 16 starts, a Big Ten title and College Football Playoff appearance in ’21.

Destination: Charlotte
Eligibility: 1 season left (graduate student)
The former five-star recruit has transferred to Charlotte, whose new head coach Biff Poggi was on Jim Harbaugh’s staff this past year and coached Okie in high school. It will be Okie’s college stop, a long, winding road that includes Alabama, Houston, Tennessee Martin and Michigan in ’22.

DL George Rooks
Destination: Boston College
Eligibility: 2 seasons left (junior)
The former three-star recruit from New Jersey transferred closer to home, despite his workload slowly increasing at Michigan. Rooks appeared in three games as a true freshman in 2021, then six games in ’22, before electing to move on.
LB Deuce Spurlock
Destination: Florida
Eligibility: 3 seasons left (sophomore)
The former three-star recruit from Alabama played just one season at Michigan, appearing in two games, before retreating to the south.
DE Taylor Upshaw
Destination: Colorado
Eligibility: 1 season left (graduate student)
Upshaw was a big part of the defense in recent years, appearing in 37 games and getting two starts, but was never able to break through and find a regular starting role. In four seasons at Michigan, the IMG Academy product totaled 36 tackles (10 1/2 for a loss), five sacks and an interception. He’ll get one more season out west, playing for Deion Sanders at Colorado.

DL Julius Welschof
Destination: Charlotte
Eligibility: 1 season left (graduate student)
Michigan’s former recruit from Germany has moved on, electing to play for Biff Poggi at Charlotte, where he’ll have one more year of eligibility. Welschof played sparingly during his five seasons at Michigan, and was never able to break through and land a regular role. He’s praised for his athleticism and freakish natural abilities, making him an intriguing player. But so far, all we’ve heard about Welschof is potential.
